Hidden Valley Camp in Maine strives to maintain long-standing traditions, offering a child-centered community rich in deep-rooted values and a Thoreau-inspired natural environment. Hidden Valley, a co-ed camp for children ages 8-14, offers an alternative because the mission-driven directors, Peter and Meg Kassen, believe their style of camp helps children grow into caring and creative adults. The camp’s non-competitive, non-sectarian community provides individualized attention to all campers in a structured yet relaxed atmosphere. Hidden Valley features modern cabins for campers and staff, healthy, homemade food in a new dining hall, and numerous well equipped craft and performance studios, all within a 300-acre rural environment. An outdoor heated pool complements the pristine Maine lake where swimming, kayaking and wind-surfing are popular activities. The camp offers more than 50 activity choices, featuring dance, theater, stained glass, pottery, photography, llama trekking, horse riding and a ropes course, to name a few. A fulfilling experience in the cabin and community is emphasized as well. Counselors are trained in group dynamics. Meg and the counselors personally keep in touch with the parents. The directors know all of the childrens’ names. Older children, ages 14-16, may enroll in Hidden Valley’s specialty arts or adventure program. “We really felt that you were parents in absentia and took that role seriously,” wrote one parent. “Thank you for the wonderful, creative and fun-filled summer at Hidden Valley.”
