The City Congregation for Humanistic Judaism is a welcoming and diverse community of secular Jews, where cultural Jewish heritage is celebrated in ways that are consistent with the congregation’s secular beliefs. The programs include monthly Shabbat celebrations for the entire family (with childcare), secular holiday services, a humanistic Passover Seder and education programs for children, teens and adults. The twice-monthly KidSchool for ages 3 through bar/bat mitzvah age followed by a teen program, educates children in Jewish culture, history, literature, holidays, ethics and social justice. The creative bar/bat mitzvah program focuses on values, making choices and taking responsibility. Students research their family history, choose heroes and role models, participate in social action and undertake a major research project on a topic of their choice. The bar/bat mitzvah service is a joyful experience, filled with readings and songs, and a presentation of the exciting work completed by the students. Humanistic Judaism offers secular Jews a non-theistic philosophy of life that integrates the values and traditions of Jewish identity with a belief in the importance of human responsibility.
